Yes, we are all different from each other. So how do tech companies make us choose to use their applications? That’s very easy; that’s by influencing that one thing that we have in common all of us—actually, it’s five things, and those are our psychology.

Let me tell you what I think when I say the color blue: I think of skies, oceans, etc. when I say the color green, I usually think of trees and nature; but when I think about red, what do we see on a daily basis? We see red at stop signs and traffic signs; what does it tell us? It gives us an alert or something like a warning. And this is how it feels with human mindsets. This color plays a role in human psychology where each color has some reason and meaning to show to society and that’s where the human mindset is captured by the UX designers.

Understanding design psychology in the context of UX to be a true discipline, but rather a tool one can use to create more effective and meaningful designs. A designer who doesn’t understand human psychology is going to be no more successful than an architect who doesn’t understand physics. If you don’t understand physics and you go to build a building, the building is just going to fall down. In the same way, as a designer you need to understand how humans think and work or your designs are going to fall down.

Understanding design psychology informs of user experience is very important, because rather than a tool one can create more effective and meaningful designs. A designer who doesn’t understand human psychology is going to be no more successful than a lawyer who doesn’t know how to argue.

Importance of Psychology in UX Design

Effective UX design requires an understanding of the users’ needs, expectations, and behaviors. Psychology plays a crucial role in this process by providing designers with insights into how people interact with technology. A good understanding of psychology can also help designers make better decisions when it comes to layout, color schemes, and other design elements, resulting in higher user satisfaction and engagement. Hick’s Law, A famous UX expert says that – It is much better to go through less to get more, the fewer options you put in an App the better will the user feel when using it. The more choices you present your users with, the longer it will take them to reach a decision.

Space isn’t naught. Good use of space communicates better than most people think! White space has a pleasant effect on the mind of a website visitor. It creates professionalism, ease of reading, and a stress-free experience.


For instance, Google has only its search bar up front. Other features of the website do not clutter the interface design. Users find this very convenient. That’s smart; Google knows people commonly use it for searching! It doesn’t mean that there is nothing more to that. It is pretty clear from the layout that the search engine is the primary feature, but they also offer other products like mail, news, and many others on the top right side of the screen in the drop-down box. Whereas this website provides so much information on the screen despite being a search engine, like news, blogs, etc., which are also good but distracts the user from the reason they came to the page.

Design is a form of communication, so a positive user experience might have a clear beginning, middle, and end — just like a story.

When your product tells a story, users easily learn how and why to use it. Your product might have a ‘voice’ and a consistent flow toward user goals, forming an unfolding narrative that users create for themselves. Be creative: how can you turn your product’s UX into a story? Their brains and hearts will thank you.
